17.03.2016 Update
On March 17, 2016, construction was completed on the Bunkyo-ku Municipal Ochanomizu University Center for Early Childhood Education and Care. Ochanomizu University and Bunkyo City held a joint press conference to celebrate the establishment of the authorized early childhood education and care facility, which serves as a kindergarten and authorized daycare center. The university already had Japan’s oldest kindergarten, established in 1876, and endeavors to amass research as well as to train human resources as a center of instruction and research on early childhood education and care in Japan.
Authorized early childhood education and care facilities are a new type of facility designed to provide integrated instruction and daycare services for preschool children and support for childrearing in local communities. For Ochanomizu University, this also serves as a venue for instruction and research related to early childhood education and care. Our university conducts new practical research here, including developing educational curricula for newborns with a focus on their lifelong development. We also carry out the quest for the best kinds of educational environments and disseminate those research results. We are striving to make this facility a center where school personnel, facility staff and administrative representatives involved in early childhood education and care—as well as people interested in providing childcare assistance—can network and contribute to early childhood education and care policy proposals.
Ochanomizu University and Bunkyo City established this facility based on an accord that supports childrearing. Both parties collaborate to provide residents with high-quality daycare and early childhood education to resolve the backlog of children on the waiting list for daycare. The facility also aims to improve the overall quality of Bunkyo City’s daycare services and early childhood education through university education and research and giving back the result to society. Please note that the university will manage the center under the direction of the Bunkyo City government.
