25.10.2019 Update
A pre-seminar for the new Humboldt admissions office (AO) entrance examination was held on Saturday, September 28, 2019. The pre-seminar is the first round of the new AO examination which was introduced in 2016. A total of 454 high school students including 219 students who were preparing to take the exam, which is an unusually high number of applicants for the new AO exam.
Our pre-seminar program is unique in that participants are not limited just to those taking the AO exam but is open extensively to second- and third-year senior high school students. Unlike the previous years holding a two-day pre-seminar, this year conducted a one-day pre-seminar on Saturday in a more intensive way.
Faculty members gave lectures in six liberal arts and seven science fields so that the participants experienced the world of academia on live. Many students participated in a library information retrieval exercise, a poster session on research and a private consultation on independent research topics by the Science Faculty/Biology Department graduate students which were designed for second- and third-year senior high school students other than students taking the entrance exam.
In the conventional entrance examination system, universities unilaterally choose who should be admitted and for students it is just pass or fail situation. In contrast, our new AO entrance examination offers opportunities for students to gain something, regardless of pass or fail, motivating them to choose Ochanomizu University as a place of leaning. We hope that more and more aspiring senior high school students will take on the challenge of this unique entrance examinations in coming years.
