Woman Shine TOKYO Konwakai “Break the glass ceiling—Toward a future society where both women and men shine” was held at Ochanomizu University Kiindo auditorium on Wednesday, November 27, 2019, attended by about 450 participants including Ochanomizu University students and faculty members as well as citizens living or working in Tokyo. The Woman Shine Tokyo Konwakai symposium was first held in 2017, with the view of sending out messages and recommendations to promote women’s empowerment under the initiative of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Ochanomizu University, awarded the Tokyo Women's Participation Promotion Award of 2018 in recognition of achievements in fostering women leaders, was selected as the venue of the symposium this year.
In the symposium, following the speeches of Governor of Tokyo Yuriko Koike and our President Kimiko Murofushi, Ms. Nami Aoyama of Bridgestone Corporation (General Manager, Future Materials Lab) and Ms. Yuko Shibata of Central Japan Railway Company (Manager, Labor Section, Personnel Department) made presentations on their works. Then, a panel discussion was held among these four speakers, facilitated by Ms. Nobuko Ikeda, an alumnae of Ochanomizu University/Life Science Department and a NHK anchorwoman, on career development, working in a managerial/executive-level position, work-life balance, and barriers in the way of the career path in terms of the glass ceiling.
After the panel discussion, in response to questions gathered in advance, Ms. Aoyama and Ms. Shibata commented on knowledge/activities in university life helpful for career development/women in leadership, Governor Koike shared her thoughts about the core element of career development based on her career as broadcaster, Governor of Tokyo and other experiences. The symposium ended with the closing remarks of the four speakers to the audience.
The final remarks of these top women leaders encouraged us to be brave and confident.
We would like to thank you all for your participation.
